Am Markt in Friedrichstadt (called Frederikstad
aan de Eider in Dutch) in
Schleswig-Holstein during a trip through Northern
Germany and Denmark. This town was founded in 1621
by Dutch settlers. Duke Friedrich III of
Holstein-Gottorp convinced them to invest capital
and knowledge in this region in turn for freedom of
their belief as well as opportunities to reclaim fen
and marsh land in the area. In the process Dutch
became an official language. Photo: Annegret
