Nikiszowiec, Katowice. This housing estate for the workers employed in the nearby coal mine was built between 1908-1911. The complex comprises redbrick blocks of flats, each with its own courtyard. There are also public buildings such as a post office, shops, a bakery, a restaurant, a hospital and two schools. This unique complex is nominated to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Because of its unspoiled character it is also a popular spot to shoot movies. Photo: © Albert Hagenaars, July 2011.
