‘TROPENDRIFT’ IN HET INDONESISCH
De in 2003 voor het eerst verschenen bundel ‘Tropendrift’ begint steeds meer een eigen leven te leiden. In september 2025 zag de Indonesische editie het licht, geflankeerd door de Engelse versie waar vertaler Landung Simatupang zich grotendeels op baseerde. Voor beide versies geldt de titel ‘Tropical Drift’. De productie was in handen van het bureau Hostwriters.
The collection ‘Tropendrift’, first published in 2003, is increasingly taking on a life of its own. The Indonesian edition was published in September 2025, alongside the English version, which translator Landung Simatupang largely based his work on. Both versions bear the title ‘Tropical Drift’. The production was done by the agency Hostwriters.
Op de omslag prijkt een fragment van een anoniem schilderij dat zich in de collectie van Albert Hagenaars bevindt. Daarop is het personage Hanuman te zien, de in ‘Tropendrift’ voorkomende apenkoning van het Indiase Hindoe-epos Ramayana.
De werkelijke hoofdrol is echter toebedeeld aan de centraal op Java gelegen Borobudur. De gedichten over deze Boeddhistische tempel met z’n stenen krans van thema’s staan niet voor niets precies in het midden van het boek. Onder de foto volgt het middelste van de drie verzen van de reeks ‘Borobudur’, in de drie betreffende talen.
The cover features a fragment of an anonymous painting in Albert Hagenaars' collection. It depicts the character of Hanuman, the monkey king from the Indian-Hindu epic ‘Ramayana’, who appears in ‘Tropendrift’.
The true protagonist, however, is Borobudur, located in central Java. It's no coincidence that the poems about this Buddhist temple, with its stone garland of themes, are placed right in the middle of the book. Below the photo you can read the middle of the three poems in the ‘Borobudur’ series, in the three corresponding languages.
BOROBUDUR II Goden kwamen met staten op en gingen ten onder. Opnieuw klimmen we langs de leeuwen omhoog. De moessons spoelden ons bloed van de trappen, over het laagste terras; dat van naijver, lust en dood. Een blanke hand tast in de as naar verzakte strofen: fruitbomen, olifanten, rechters, een kleine vrouw met een speer, en raakt aan gebroken snaren, mijn liefde voor jou. Harde klanken van bewondering, en onbegrip. Boven neem ik haar in m’n armen, til haar op. We lachen, worden elkaar. Haar rok laat me bloot. Ik moest je vader zijn en strijk alles weer glad. Staten komen met goden op, gaan eraan ten onder. |

BOROBUDUR II Gods rose with states and eventually declined Once more we clamber upwards past the lions. The monsoons washed our blood off the stairs, over the lowest terrace; that of envy, lust and death. A white hand feels in the ashes for subsided verses: fruit trees, elephants, judges, a small woman with a spear, and touches broken strings, my love for you. Harsh sounds of admiration, and incomprehension. On top I take her in my arms, lift her up. We laugh, become each other. Her frock leaves me naked. I had to be your father and stroke everything smooth again. States rise with gods, who trigger their decline. |

Musim-musim penghujan membasuh darah kita dari tangga, di atas aras paling rendah; aras iri dengki, nafsu dan kematian. Tangan putih menggagapi abu mencari puisi yang terbenam: pohon buahan, gajah, para hakim, perempuan mungil memegang tombak, dan menyentuh dawai-dawai retas, cintaku kepadamu. EEN KORTE GESCHIEDENIS
Begin jaren tachtig maakte Albert Hagenaars z’n eerste reizen naar Zuidoost-Azië. Hij bezocht Maleisië, Singapore, Thailand en, elke keer langer, Indonesië.
Onder de indruk van zulke sterk uiteenlopende culturen begon hij gedichten over z’n reiservaringen te schrijven, die geleidelijk in tijdschriften als Gierik & NVT, Maatstaf en Poëziekrant verschenen en in 2003 als boek. Dit droeg, omdat het in het Nederlands en het Engels in één band op de markt kwam, twee titels: ‘Tropendrift’ en ‘Tropical Drift’.
De Engelse vertaling is van John Irons, in die jaren actief voor Poetry International. Uitgeverij In de Knipscheer in Haarlem verzorgde de presentatie, die op 27 november 2003 plaatsvond in de zaal van poëziecentrum Stichting Perdu, aan de Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam.
A BRIEF HISTORY
In the early 1980s, Albert Hagenaars made his first trips to Southeast Asia. He visited Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and, each time for longer periods, Indonesia.
Impressed by such vastly different cultures, he began writing poems about his travel experiences, which gradually appeared in magazines such as Gierik & NVT, Maatstaf, and Poëziekrant, and in 2003 as a book. Because it was published in a single volume in Dutch and English, it bore two titles: ‘Tropendrift’ and ‘Tropical Drift’.
The English translation is by John Irons, who was active for Poetry International at the time. Publisher In de Knipscheer in Haarlem organized the presentation, which took place on November 27, 2003, in the auditorium of Poetry Centre Perdu, on Kloveniersburgwal in Amsterdam.

De Amerikaanse componist Dirk Stromberg, die al vele jaren in Singapore woont en werkt, zette 18 gedichten van ‘Tropical Drift’ op muziek. Bijgestaan door muzikanten Christopher Bacas (saxofoon), Andrea LaRose (fluit), Andrew Livingston (bas) en Alfredo Ma (gitaar) produceerde hij in 2006 tevens een gelijknamige CD. Douglas Cohen leest daarop de teksten voor.
American composer Dirk Stromberg, who has lived and worked in Singapore for many years, set 18 poems from "Tropical Drift" to music. Accompanied by musicians Christopher Bacas (saxophone), Andrea LaRose (flute), Andrew Livingston (bass), and Alfredo Ma (guitar), he also produced a CD of the same name in 2006. Douglas Cohen reads the lyrics.

Dankzij bemiddeling van cultureel centrum Karta Pustaka in de Javaanse stad Yogyakarta, maakte auteur, dichter en theaterman Landung Simatupang enkele jaren later in etappes een integrale vertaling van Tropendrift in Bahasa Indonesia.
Thanks to the mediation of cultural centre Karta Pustaka in the Javanese city of Yogyakarta, author, poet, and theater artist Landung Simatupang produced a complete translation of ‘Tropendrift’ into Bahasa Indonesia in stages a few years later.

Onder de titel ‘Reliefuri Însângerate’ (Bloedende Reliëfs), verscheen in 2015, op instigatie van Orizont Literar Contemporan in Boekarest, een Roemeense vertaling van Roxana Doncu en Zenofia Popa, met alleen de gedichten uit ‘Tropendrift’ die betrekking hebben op Indonesië.
Uitgever was PIM, gevestigd in de stad Iași.
In 2015, at the instigation of Orizont Literar Contemporan in Bucharest, a Romanian translation by Roxana Doncu and Zenofia Popu was published under the title ‘Reliefuri Însângerate’ (Bleeding Reliefs). The translation included only the poems from ‘Tropendrift’ that pertain to Indonesia.
The publisher was PIM, based in the city of Iași.
JAKARTA: 1965 Papier ritselt. Een kakkerlak kruipt uit nieuws dat nieuw bleef. Onze gastvrouw vraagt iets in het Chinees aan haar vader. Hij schudt nauwelijks merkbaar het hoofd, blijft maar roeren in zijn thee. Het jaar waar onze familie nooit over praat rimpelt open: opgerold geld, ampullen en lijsten van namen uit Glodok. Mijn nieuwe tante omarmt hem, staart om hulp. Ik ben pas tien maar schrijf wat ik kan: ‘Ze begroef de boeken, ontbond haar haar en deed het witte kleed aan in het achterhuis, waar ze haar vonden, en niet meer lieten gaan.’ Oma is het kopje, rinkelend in zijn hand. |

JAKARTA: 1965 Paper rustles. A cockroach creeps from news papers that remained new. Our landlady asks her father something in Chinese. He shakes his head almost imperceptibly, keeps on stirring his tea. The year which our family never talks about ripples open: rolled-up money, ampoules and lists of names from Glodok. My new aunt embraces him, stares for help. I am only ten but write what I can: ‘She buried the books, undid her hair and put on the white dress in the outhouse, where they found her, and did not let her go again.’ Grandma is the small cup, tinkling in his hand. |

JAKARTA: 1965 Hârtia foșnește. Un gândac răsare de sub ziarele rămase necitite. Proprietara îi pune o întrebare tatălui ci în chineză. El dă din cap aproape imperceptibil, mestecă înainte în ceai. Medio 2018, toen de CD al was uitverkocht en niet meer opnieuw zou worden uitgebracht, zette Dirk Stromberg alle 18 door hem op muziek gezette gedichten op streamingdienst Bandcamp.
